Once I had arrived on the island, I no longer really wanted to check the time or plan what came next. My Experience In The Maldives
The seaplane flight from Male
After arriving in Male, the transfer to Landaa Giraavaru is usually by seaplane. This stage already feels like part of the experience. The take-off, the distinctive sound of the aircraft and the view over the atolls create a very different feeling from a standard transfer.
From the sky, the Maldives take on another dimension. The shapes of the islands, the shades of the lagoon and the reefs look almost unreal. You quickly understand why the arrival becomes such a strong part of the memory.
My arrival at Landaa Giraavaru did not go exactly as planned, though. That day, the weather had other ideas: it was clearly not on our side. Instead of flying directly to the island, we stopped on a platform on stilts in the middle of the ocean. The scene felt suspended. Around us, there was only water, sky and a strange, rather turbulent wait.
A speedboat then took over. In the end, this less conventional arrival became one of the most memorable parts of the trip. After seeing the Maldives from the air, we still had to wait a little longer before finally setting foot on the sand. Landaa Giraavaru made itself longed for, and I think that made the first moments on the island even more special. It revealed itself like a reward at the end of the lagoon.

I stayed in a villa set directly on the beach, with a private pool. The beach almost becomes a natural extension of the room, while the pool creates an intimate space for relaxing.
Comfort here is not only about the size of the villa. It also comes from that sense of space, calm and freedom. You can move from the bed to the sand, from the terrace to the water, without any break in the experience. Everything seems designed to let time stretch.

In the morning, the light transforms the beach. Later, the heat draws you back toward the shade or the pool. By evening, the atmosphere becomes softer, almost unreal. These changes give the stay a real texture.
Swimming with rays
One of the strongest moments of this trip remains the chance I had to swim with rays. Their way of moving through the water, so calm and fluid, fascinated me immediately.
In Baa Atoll, marine life holds an essential place. Underwater, I found exactly what I had come to the Maldives hoping for: the feeling of entering another world. The water is so clear that you can make out the animals’ movements long before they pass near you. Watching the rays glide with such slowness and elegance was almost hypnotic. For a few moments, I thought of nothing except seeing them move through the blue. When you are in the water, the scenery becomes alive around you.
However, this experience requires respect. You need to keep your distance, follow the team’s guidance and let the animals move freely. That way, the memory remains beautiful for the traveller and fairer to the marine environment.

I also visited the Marine Discovery Centre at Landaa Giraavaru. This visit added another layer to the stay, because it showed the lagoon from a different angle. Behind the immediate beauty of the Maldives, there are also care programmes, monitoring work and essential actions.
On site, I saw sea turtles protected by the centre. Some were being cared for so they could regain strength before returning to the ocean. This encounter moved me deeply. It showed me that these rescues are not small details, but a real necessity for the marine world.
The centre works in particular on sea turtle rehabilitation. The teams care for animals that need treatment, with the aim of allowing them to return to the ocean when their condition makes it possible. Monitoring, observation and photo-identification projects also help improve understanding of their presence around the atoll.
This dimension changes the way you look at the island. Luxury becomes more meaningful when it also leaves room for preservation. After seeing those turtles, the lagoon felt even more precious.

In the Maldives, nature is not limited to the lagoon. On Landaa Giraavaru, it is also normal to come across animals along a path, near the vegetation or on the sand. This presence makes the experience feel more alive and closer to the island itself.
I was especially lucky to see and photograph a fruit bat. Seeing it in the trees reminded me that the island has its own life, even when the beaches and turquoise water first capture all the attention.
I also managed to photograph a gecko on the sand. I had already spotted some in the villa, but they were far too quick for my camera. However comfortable the resort may be, nature here remains discreet, free and very present.
For me, these encounters add a lot of charm to Landaa Giraavaru. They give the impression of staying in a place inhabited by life, not simply in a perfect setting.

This mix creates a very enveloping atmosphere. You can walk among the trees, then reach a splendid beach in just a few moments. The island seems to change its face depending on where you are standing.
For me, this alliance between comfort, nature and lagoon made the experience incredible. It felt unique, both in the setting and in the way we arrived there.

The resort works beautifully for an exceptional trip, a romantic escape or a stay focused on relaxation. Lovers of snorkelling, splendid beaches and preserved environments will find a very strong atmosphere here.
However, this type of stay does require enjoying island isolation. Once you are there, the island becomes the heart of the experience. You need to accept living for a few days at the island’s rhythm. Travellers who like changing hotels often or multiplying urban outings may prefer a different kind of itinerary.

For me, this stay also carried a very personal feeling. I had always dreamed of discovering the Maldives. Once there, I understood that some images only tell a small part of what you truly feel.
